The name of this state park is a combination of the last name of Spanish explorer Juan Bautista de Anza, and the Spanish word for sheep — borrego. As California’s largest state park, Ana Borrego protects more than 600,000 acres of badlands, oases, canyons, and more. Access to the stunning views is limited to primarily primitive roads or hiking. Renting a 4WD vehicle with high clearance is your best bet if you prefer not to travel on foot. Be sure to bring plenty of water as you will be in the desert, and don’t forget your camera!
